Our president was Richard M. Nixon, Time Magazine's Man of the Year. His Secretary of State was Henry Kissinger. We were just coming out of the 1969-70 Recession and trying to deal with inflation. Nixon implemented a Wage and Price freeze for 90 days beginning on August 15th. Average per capita income was $2,650.00.

NASA missions to the moon included Apollo 14 and Apollo 15. These missions came 18 months after the near disastrous Apollo 13 mission. (Do you remember it?) NASA also sent Mariner 9 to Mars to explore there.
Detroit came out with the sub-compact cars to compete with the Toyotas and Nissans from Japan. Popular cars included the Pinto, Gremlin, Vega and, of course, the Volkswagon.
